The Golden State Warriors didn’t expect much from their rookie class….yet

The Warriors drafted with an eye on the future last June as they knew they wouldn’t have many minutes available for the rookies. Forward Brandan Wright was the player the Warriors got in return for Jason Richardson from the Bobcats in a draft day trade and he oozes with potential. Wright played in 38 games (6 starts) for the Warriors this season and he averaged 9.9 minutes, 4.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. Wright shot 55.4% from the floor as he took a lot of high percentage shots but he needs to improve on his free throw shooting as he only hit 67.5% from the line. Wright has a bright future for the Warriors as he is a sleek athlete that can get out and run.

Guard Marco Belinelli was the other first round pick of the Warriors and he had a rough time at the start of the season before improving his play. Belinelli played in 33 games (0 starts) this season and he averaged 7.3 minutes, 2.9 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. He had trouble with the physical play in the NBA so he will need to get tougher to succeed. He also came into the league with the reputation of being a good shooter but he only hit 38.7% of his shots from the floor and that will need to improve if he wants to get extended playing time in the future.

Guard C.J. Watson played pretty well in limited action for the Warriors. He played in 32 games (0 starts) for the Warriors and he averaged 11.5 minutes, 3.7 rebounds, 10 rebound and 1.1 assists per game. Watson will get more playing time if he continues to improve.

7′2″, 240 pound F/C Kosta Perovic rarely got off the bench in his rookie season. He played in 7 games (0 starts) for the Warriors this season and he averaged 5.4 minutes, 1.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game. Perovic only shot 30% from the floor and that is flat out unacceptable.

The Golden State Warriors don’t have much PT for rookies

The Warriors have some rookies with potential but they don’t have much playing time to offer them. Brandan Wright has played in 21 games (3 starts) this season for the Warriors and he is averaging 8.8 minutes, 3.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. He has made 51.7% of his shots from the floor but only 62.5% of his free throws. He may be a future starter down the road for the Warriors. Fellow first round pick Marco Belinelli hasn’t had much success in his rookie season. He has played in 21 games (0 starts) so far this season and he is averaging 7.8 minutes, 2.4 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. He is only shooting 31% from the floor and it will be hard for him to get off the bench until he improves on that. Guard C.J. Watson appears to be a talented player but he’s buried on the depth chart. He has played in 15 games (0 starts) so far this season for the Warriors and he is averaging 13.3 minutes, 4.4 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. He is shooting 45.1% of his shots from the floor, 35.3% from three point range and 87.5% of his free throws. 7′2″, 240 pound center Kosta Perovic has played in 1 game this season and he scored 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in only 7 minutes.

The rookies on the Golden State Warriors aren’t getting much playing time

First round picks Brandan Wright and Marco Belinelli haven’t got onto the floor much for the Warriors and F/C Kosta Perovic hasn’t played at all. Wright has played in 11 games so far this season for the Warriors and he is averaging 2.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. He is shooting 41.4% from the floor but only 50% from the free throw line so far. If he improves on his shooting his playing time will increase as he definately has the athletic ability to excel in the Warriors offense. Marco Belinelli is having a rough adjustment to the NBA and the Warriors style of play. Belinelli is only shooting 23.9% from the floor, 29.2% from the three point line and 66.7% from the free throw line. He has played in 15 games this season and he is averaging 8.5minutes, 2.1 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. If he doesn’t start shooting better his butt will be nailed to the bench.

The Golden State Warriors rookies earn a C-

Blogged under Bloglockers, Rookie Reports, Front Page by alleyoop on Friday 20 April 2007 at 9:43 am

The grade is so low because of first round pick Patrick O’Bryant who played more games in the D-League than he did for the Warriors. Sleek (G/F) Kelenna Azubuike is the reason for the pumped up grade. Azubuike played in 41 games this season and he averaged 16.3 minutes, 7.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.7 assists. He also shot an amazing 43% from three-point range. He’s a perfect backup player for Don Nelson’s team as he can shoot well and run the floor. Center Patrick O’Bryant played in 16 games and he averaged 7.4 minutes, 1.9 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. He also shot a very poor 31.3% from the floor. If O’Bryant doesn’t improve soon, his NBA career will be a short one.

Warriors’ rookies going in opposite directions

Shooting guard Kelenna Azubuike has played very well for the Warriors and deserves more playing time. He has only played in 13 games but he’s averaging 19.4 minutes, 9.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists. Azubuike also has been smokin’ hot from three-point range as he’s hit 16 of his 32 attempts (50%).

1st round pick Patrick O’Bryant has been a huge disappointment for the Warriors. They have sent him to the D-League to get experience and work on his game. Coach Nelson said that he’s a nice kid…..someone he would rather go to dinner with than put in a game……ouch!  He has played in 13 games for the Warriors this season and is averaging 7.7 minutes, 1.9 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.6 assists. He also has only made 7 of his 25 FG attempts (28%).
